What was the alternative ending of the first Squid Game season?
We say the first season of Squid Game because Hwang Dong-hyuk just confirmed that Season 2 of the drama-thriller series is already in development. If you’ve been living under a rock for the past two months, let us give you a quick summary of what Squid Game is all about. Although the series doesn’t exactly revolve around just one person, the primary star is Lee Jung-jae’s Seong-Gi-hun, otherwise known as No. 456. A gambling addict estranged from his family, No. 456 joins a game of survival in a bid to solve his crippling debt problem and earn enough money to see her daughter who his ex-wife is taking to the United States. After making it through a grueling competition featuring games based on children’s games, No. 456 survives and ends up pocketing 45.6 billion won or almost $39 million. The original Squid Game ending sees Gi-hun board a plane as if to start a new life abroad. However, at the last moment, he turns around with what appears to be a determined look. Many speculate that Gi-hun is going back to South Korea to take out those who are behind Squid Game. This would effectively set up the second season of the series. However, according to an EW interview, Hwang thought hard about how he wanted the show to end. He added that an alternate ending would have seen Gi-hun board the plane and leave South Korea for good. Ultimately, Hwang decided to go with the current finale of Squid Game’s first season, and that was pretty much all she wrote. It’s difficult to say if Hwang made the right choice or not. On one hand, giving Gi-hun the happy ending that he most certainly deserved feels right. He could have just completely forgotten about everything that had happened and retired a multi-millionaire. The next season would have shifted towards an entirely new set of characters or maybe it would explore the Front Man’s past and why he decided to join as a facilitator after already winning the titular competitive deathmatch back in 2015. Regardless of what happens with Season 2 of Netflix’s Squid Game, we can only hope that it doesn’t take the series creator just as long to make Season 2 happen as he did the first season. In the meantime, Squid Game fans can look forward to watching Mr. Beast’s version of Squid Game.
