Embracer confirmed in a press release that it has completed its acquisition of Square Enix Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos-Montreal. Here’s what Embracer had to say about the completion of the buyout: One of the biggest reasons why Square Enix sold off its western subsidiaries is funding. The company no longer sees its foreign IPs as worthy of investing in. Case in point, Square Enix thought that the GOTY-nominee, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, was a disappointment. The company has made similar statements about other games since and further in the past like Outriders and even Shadow of the Tomb Raider. But, now that Embracer owns Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain, Tomb Raider, and more, we’re curious to find out just what exactly it is planning to do. If nothing else, we can guarantee that Embracer won’t be penny-pinching anytime soon. Here’s a complete list of everything that Embracer has acquired this year alone:
Square Enix Montreal Crystal Dynamics Eidos-Montreal Middle-earth Enterprises Bitwave Games Gioteck Limited Run Games Singtrix Tatsujin Tripwire Interactive Tuxedo Labs
A company like Embracer owning so many potential best-selling IPs is scary to think about. Keep in mind that Embracer also bought several other companies in the past two years such as Gearbox Entertainment, Perfect World Entertainment, and Dark Horse Comics. We’d love to see Embracer leverage these acquisitions to release new games in forgotten fan-favorite IPs such as Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain games. Speaking of the aforementioned projects, Eidos Montreal is interested in achieving greater heights than Cyberpunk 2077 with a new Deus Ex game. The studio is currently working on a new IP. Also, a leaked Tomb Raider script might have revealed the early plans for the next game in the franchise considering that the previous owners, Square Enix, lobbied hard for it to be taken down from the internet. Finally, the latest word from the grapevine suggests that Saber Interactive has taken over work on the KOTOR remake from Aspyr Media.
