The Jungle Cruise sequel is full speed ahead

The movie, which is based on one of the oldest Disney theme park attractions, was a resounding success. Although Johnson mentioned previously that a sequel was on the table because of how well the film did, it was not, by any means, a confirmation. However, according to THR, it appears that Johnson’s sit down with Disney went very well, and that he as well as his co-star, Blunt, are both set to return for a second Jungle Cruise film. In addition to Johnson and Blunt reprising their roles as Captain Frank Wolff and Dr. Lily Houghton, respectively, screenwriter Michael Green is also going to return for Jungle Cruise 2 along with Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Director Jaume-Collet-Serra is also set to come back to man the helm, making this his third time working together with Johnson. Jungle Cruise is easily one of the biggest surprises of the pandemic-stricken box office. Despite the circumstances, the film did relatively well. It opened to $35 million at the box office during its first weekend and raked in more than $30 million from Disney+ Premier Access. As of the time of this writing, Jungle Cruise has pulled in $187 million from the global box office. It doesn’t match up well when put against the film’s $200 million budget, but it’s not bad when you think about the other films with similarly large budgets that did worse. With all that said, a Jungle Cruise sequel shouldn’t be a surprise. If anything, the surprising thing here is what took Disney so long to confirm it. Disney should have announced the sequel before the film premiered to help generate even more hype. Of course, what’s done is done. It’s better to just focus on other things now, like where Wolff and Houghton will go next.
