But, don’t worry, Kratos is no longer the Ghost of Sparta nor is he out for vengeance. He’s just an incredibly powerful but still-grumpy old man right now whose default response to requests is a grunt before doing it anyway. Oh, and Kratos has now set a new record for the PlayStation platform with God of War: Ragnarok.
After defying destiny and effectively telling death to go take a hike to the top of Jotunheim in his latest outing, God of War: Ragnarok has set a new record for the “fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history.” According to Sony, the combined sales of Ragnarok on the PS4 and the PS5 have reached 5.1 units already. In comparison, the platform’s previous record-holder, The Last of Us: Part II, sold 4 million copies in three days when it came out in 2020. Before that, Marvel’s Spider-Man held the record at 3.3 million copies in three days, which is more than what God of War managed at 3.1 million copies. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t reveal the numbers of the said games in their launch week. Then again, God of War: Ragnarok outsold all but FIFA 23 this year, this is hardly surprising.
— PlayStation (@PlayStation) November 23, 2022 5 million copies in a week is a lot. In comparison, the 2018 reboot sold nearly half of that in three days and ended up selling 23 million units in total. If we assume God of War: Ragnarok can keep pumping its numbers, it wouldn’t surprise us if the game ends up selling close to 15 million copies before the holiday season ends, much more so if God of War: Ragnarok ends up winning GOTY over Elden Ring on December 8. Maybe, by then, we’ll find out if and when God of War: Ragnarok will be headed to the PC. Although we’re pretty sure Horizon Forbidden West will be the first to head to desktops of the two, most probably by next year if not early 2024. As a critical darling, commercial success, and being a narrative hit that gives Kratos the closure he deserves, God of War: Ragnarok is one for the ages. We’re hoping Sony will give God of War: Ragnarok the honor of being the first to have a custom-themed PS5 designed based on it after releasing the custom-designed DualSense. Speaking of God of War: Ragnarok, the game’s director, Eric Williams, just confirmed that he’d love to get a shot at a Castlevania game. Finally, the long-time series developer, Cory Barlog, is still helping out owners of God of War: Ragnarok get their missing copies.
