It isn’t clear how this information was acquired by Twitter profile PlayStation Game Size, but as their name suggests the account specializes in this sort of thing and has a pretty much spotless track record when it comes to revealing install sizes. Since the launch date of Guardians of the Galaxy is near, it is plausible that this info would slip out.

The download size of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be 41.243 GB at launch without the day-one patch, the existence of which apparently is also now leaked. Not only is this an awfully exact figure - dang lads, down to the third decimal point? - but 41 GB in this day and age for a AAA blockbuster is surprisingly low. There is an explanation for this, mind - most of the criticisms pointed at Marvel’s Avengers since it launched in 2020 focused on aggressive monetization, grindy gameplay and an overall sense of shallowness. With Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Eidos pulled a full 180° and crafted a fully single player experience with no form of multiplayer or microtransactions. The goal here is to deliver a tight, deep, well polished and complete RPG-lite action-adventure experience. Cutting multiplayer entirely will lead to a more reserved file size. Some of the most notoriously large AAA games these days, ranging well over 100 GB, do so because of multiplayer bloat and having to keep huge texture files for all sorts of microtransaction nonsense on hand at all times. Looking at you, Warzone.

Now, file sizes do have a tendency to change from platform to platform, and this 41 GB number applies to the PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 4 should be in a similar ballpark, though possibly smaller owing to the lesser visuals on that version. Players will apparently be able to pre-load the game starting October 24th in order to be ready to play the moment it launches, but this too only applies to PlayStation right now - that said, pre-load dates are usually universal, unless some exclusivity deals give one crowd a leg up. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy launches on the 26th of October.
