Leatherface is back and he’s coming to Netflix
Just like how 2018’s Halloween retconned every other Halloween film that was released after the 1978 movie of the same name, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre will do the same for the titular franchise. Unfortunately, the first-look photos do not do anything to lift the veil over what’s going to happen in the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. However, despite knowing so little about the upcoming movie, there are some things that we know that are certain. For example, we know that we’re going to see Mark Burnham from 2013’s Wrong Cops take on the role of the series’ antagonist, Leatherface. The sequel will also reportedly take place many years after the events of the 1974 film with Leatherface nothing more than just a figment of imagination in the eyes of many. Of course, we all know that this isn’t true and the upcoming sequel will try to bring back the fan-favorite killer to the forefront of mainstream media. Leatherface is a staple in the horror movie lexicon. He is right up there alongside Freddy Kreuger, Jason Voorhees, and Michael Myers. In a similar fashion to his contemporaries, Netflix’s take on Texas Chainsaw Massacre will attempt to revive the horror legend. Unfortunately, in doing so, the sequel might gloss over some of the more forgettable Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequels. According to producer Fede Álvarez, Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel won’t erase the well-received sequels. He explains that doing so “feels a bit disrespectful to all the other films.” However, he did admit that the other movies are “such a mess canon-wise” and that he’s leaving it up to audiences to “decide when and how the events of the other movies happen.” In a way, you could say that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a soft reboot of the franchise. With that said, Netflix also gave fans a date to look forward to after dropping the upcoming sequel’s first trailer and other photos. Netflix confirmed that the still-unnamed Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel will release on February 18, 2022.
