Voldemort’s reputation as a villain was further enhanced by Ralph Fiennes’ portrayal of the character in the Harry Potter movies. Harry Potter’s archnemesis appeared in five of the eight movies. Fiennes was recently asked if he was open to the possibility of returning as the dark wizard. Speaking to Variety, the actor expressed his interest in reprising the role. “Sure, of course,” he answered. Fiennes was also asked about joining a future project in the “Harry Potter” universe. “No question about it,” was the reply. Variety interviewed the actor at the New York premiere of his latest movie project, The Menu. Fiennes takes on the role of Julian Slowik, a celebrity chef running the Hawthrone. Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, and John Leguizamo star in the movie alongside Fiennes. The Menu has been well received by critics with an average rating of 7.7/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic also gave the movie “generally favorable reviews.” The dark wizard Voldemort was present in all the Harry Potter films except for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Several actors played the role mainly of a hooded figure in the first few movies. Fiennes was tapped to portray the antagonist in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire where it was revealed that he had a physical form. In the movies, Voldemort has snake-like slit nostrils and no hair. Fiennes appeared in all the next four films of the series. His character would take on bigger roles towards the end of the series. He was ultimately defeated by Harry Potter in an epic duel in Deathly Hollows - Part 2. It would be difficult for Voldemort to return in any Harry Potter sequel as the villain died towards the end of the final movie. A spin-off movie involving Voldemort, the Death Eaters, and Professor Snape would also be unlikely after Alan Rickman passed away unless Warner decides to recast the role. Warner Bros could explore an origins story for the character of Tom Marvolo Riddle, the wizard who would eventually be known as Lord Voldemort. However, it would be unlikely that Fiennes would be cast in the role given his current age. The Fantastic Beasts series is also set on another continent decades before the events of the first Harry Potter movie. It would be highly unlikely that Voldemort’s influence would span continents given that he did not have a physical form until the fourth movie. The only scenario for Fiennes to return to the franchise is if author J.K. Rowling found a way to resurrect him for the upcoming Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. They could add flashback scenes involving the dark wizard in the film. It would be short, but that should give Ralph Fiennes a chance to reprise the role. Will we ever see Lord Voldemort return to the big screen? Only J.K. Rowling knows the answer to that question.
