According to recent estimates, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has now pulled in $325 million at the global box office, pushing it past its predecessor, 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, which was sixth all-time after earning nearly $320 million at the global box office. Furthermore, Sonic’s second live-action outing is now the most successful video game movie of all time in the United States with many also considering it the best movie adaptation of a video game ever. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 currently holds a 67% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 96% audience score, which is far higher compared to other video game films with similar box office numbers. After premiering on April 8, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was on the fast track to becoming the highest-grossing video game feature of all time. Unfortunately, the sequel just could not maintain its momentum, so it will have to “settle” for sixth place. The good news is that the third installment could outdo the first two films and finally become the first big-budget gaming adaptation that broke past the half-billion mark at the global box office. Things are on the up and up for video game movies these days. In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Uncharted also made history after a nearly-$400 million haul from ticket sales worldwide.
