After confirming Madame Web earlier this year and casting Dakota Johnson in the lead role as well as signing Sydney Sweeney as a still-unannounced cast member, Sony has given the psychic’s feature film debut a release date. According to Sony Pictures, Madame Web is set to come out on July 7, 2023. What’s particularly interesting about the Madame Web movie is that it’s coming after two Spider-Man films tackled the multiverse. The first one to do so was 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which brought multiple versions of Spider-Man from different timelines and universes together. Three years later, Marvel Studios would do the same with Spider-Man: No Way Home to much box office success. Madame Web’s ties to the multiversal construct, The Great Web, that’s believed to tie all Spider-related characters together suggests that Johnson’s entry into the SSU will include different Spider-Man characters. Unfortunately, much of the plot details surrounding Madame Web are still under wraps. However, now that we know when it’s coming out, we should hear more about when the cameras will start rolling soon. Madame Web will see S.J. Clarkson’s return to doing Marvel projects after working on both Jessica Jones and The Defenders for Netflix before the shows came to Disney+. Meanwhile, the duo of Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama have signed on to write the script after penning Jared Leto’s much-maligned Morbius. Speaking of Sony and its Spider-Man universe, Madame Web isn’t the only SSU film that’s headed to theaters in 2023. Kraven the Hunter will open up the year for Sony’s ambitious cinematic universe on January 13, 2023. Fingers crossed, we’ll find out when we’ll see Venom next by then.
