Technically, the PS5 remake of The Last of Us still topped the sales charts. When you think of how much marketing hype the game received before it launched, you’d expect it to have better numbers. According to GamesIndustry’s Christopher Dring, The Last of Us Part 1 only sold “around half” of last week’s Saints Row. When you consider that the Saints Row reboot received unflattering reviews and was a mild hit at best, this isn’t a good sign for Sony. The only consolation is that GamesIndustry’s numbers are purely physical sales. Then again, nothing suggests that The Last of Us Part 1 did better digitally.

— Christopher Dring (@Chris_Dring) September 4, 2022 Despite Sony’s best efforts, The Last of Us Part 1 failed to gain much traction. A developer went as far as to defend the game from being labeled as a cash cow, although the numbers would suggest that Naughty Dog might not have made as much money from the remake as expected. You can’t help but wonder if The Last of Us Part 1 would’ve done better if it came out at the same time as HBO’s The Last of Us next year, or if it carried a lower price tag or, preferably, both. Speaking of Naughty Dog, the award-winning studio is believed to be working on a fantasy IP next after it’s done with the multiplayer spin-off to The Last of Us.
