A true sequel to the 1980s classic Ghostbusters films, Afterlife introduces the franchise to an entirely new generation of moviegoers while also paying proper homage to the series’ older fans. In fact, the director of the film, Jason Reitman, is the son of the director of the 1980s films, Ivan Reitman, who is also on board as one of the producers on Afterlife.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Afterlife will revolve around the story of a single mother and her two children. The trio move to Summerville, Oklahoma after an unknown relative literally gives them the keys to their property. As it turns out, the family is related to the original Ghostbusters, who, by this time, are considered more of a myth. Most don’t even remember the events of the original film anymore, otherwise known as the Manhattan Crossrip of 1984. Other actors from the original Ghostbusters film are also set to reprise their roles in Afterlife. It’s crazy to think that there has only been two Ghostbusters live-action films released. Sony initially tried to revive the franchise with a reboot back in 2016. However, the resulting commercial and critical flop meant Reitman was required to come and work on a sequel to the original Ghostbusters films. Details of Afterlife emerged throughout 2019, with the original cast members signing on (sadly except for Harold Ramis, who played Dr. Egon Spengler and died 2014). Now, two years later, it looks like Afterlife is finally complete and ready to be shown in theaters. Ghostbusters: Afterlife was intended to premiere in July 2020. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film was delayed multiple times. It wasn’t until earlier this year that the November 11, 2021 premiere date was finally confirmed.
