According to a recent leak, an unnamed studio is working on a Metal Gear Solid remake for the PlayStation 5 as an exclusive title. The same source claims that the remake has been in development for several years, which would be in line with what we heard in the past. More importantly, it’s believed that we’ll hear more about this project soon. Although Konami hasn’t officially confirmed that it’s revisiting Metal Gear Solid, it did mention that it has multiple projects based on its older IPs. Metal Gear Solid might be a part of its attempt at re-establishing itself as a premiere gaming company.

Konami last released a Metal Gear game in 2018 to mostly negative reviews from the series’ longtime fans. Metal Gear Survive was largely seen as the company cashing in after Kojima left. However, Konami hasn’t exactly become irrelevant. For example, Castlevania just reached a wider audience, thanks to Netflix. Four seasons later, Netflix greenlit a sequel to the anime adaptation of Castlevania, Castlevania: Nocturne. This has resulted in Santa Monica Studio showing interest in the franchise. Finally, a remake of Silent Hill 2 and a new Silent Hill film, are both in the works, among several other IPs. It’s still unclear if this rumored PS5-exclusive Metal Gear Solid remake is different from the unconfirmed remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater by Virtuos Studios. In an ideal world, a modern remake of both titles would be in development. After all, they’re widely considered Kojima’s best games. But, the chances of that happening is slimmer than seeing a fully realized release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Then again, stranger things have happened before. Who knows? We might get an update about the Metal Gear Solid movie, one of these days.
