The Ray Gun has a long and decorated history within Zombies, being an iconic and exceedingly powerful weapon in Zombies, dispensing with the shambling hordes quickly and easily. Coveted and praised, it gained a reputation, and reputations need to be upheld.

That is where the Vanguard version has seemingly fallen flat. The Ray Gun wasn’t in Vanguard’s take on Zombies from the get go, and was released recently as part of an update. Fans were eagerly awaiting the arrival of the fabled weapon, but were left underwhelmed.

And for those wondering if you can equip both Wonder Weapons at the same time in #TerraMaledicta… give it a try. 😉 pic.twitter.com/QVp0wv2esW — Treyarch Studios (@Treyarch) February 14, 2022 Even the weakest enemies in Zombies could take multiple hits from the Ray Gun, and it was hardly a notable advantage against bigger hordes and tougher enemies. Luckily, the complaints did not fall on deaf ears, and fixes to the Ray Gun’s balance and performance are on the way. However, Treyarch managed to find levity in the situation - fans have discovered an easter egg in the game that could only possibly be a reference to this entire Ray Gun balance situation. Specifically, this easter egg was buried on the Terra Maledicta map. As you are running around, killing and dodging zombies, you’ll find a location marked “Dig” that you can interact with. Upon doing so, a Ray Gun with a red glowing aura will ceremoniously rise from the sand. Initially, many players were tricked, thinking this was a free pickup, or even a beefed up “proper” Ray Gun.

Alas, they were had. The glowing Ray Gun would disappear without granting you any bonuses, but it does leave a parting gift - a set of zombies will immediately spawn right behind you, dropping you into what is by all accounts a hairy situation. It’s nice to see AAA devs responding quickly to player concerns, and we’re happy that the Ray Gun will blast away at the undead at full power soon. It’s similarly nice to see developers finding the time and space to joke about these things, and that easter eggs aren’t going out of vogue. We’re eager to try out the iconic wonder weapon in its fixed, appropriately powerful form sometime soon.
