Outside of Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rocksteady Studios’ Arkham trilogy, as well as NetherRealm Studios’ pair of Injustice games and a handful of LEGO titles, there is a minimal representation of comic book superheroes in gaming. Warner Bros. Discovery, the new name of the entity formed following the merging of WarnerMedia and Discovery, is well aware of this. More importantly, it would like to do something about DC’s approach going forward. According to a Variety report, Warner Bros. Discovery wants to overhaul DC Entertainment. The new management sees that there is an opportunity for the comic book brand to “grow its approach to comic book fare, including bolstering gaming.” The same report did not go into detail about what DC’s renewed gaming efforts would look like, but we imagine that it would mirror Marvel Studios’ current plans. Marvel has started to leverage its non-Spider Man IPs in gaming in recent years. Admittedly, Crystal Dynamics’ Marvel’s Avengers wasn’t the best outing and Square Enix knows this. However, Eidos-Montréal’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was an excellent game that won accolades. Subsequent attempts from other studios like Insomniac Games’ Wolverine and Firaxis Games’ Marvel’s Midnight Suns should enjoy similar success. In comparison, most of the DC-based games coming within the next year all revolve around Batman. There’s this year’s Gotham Knights, a game featuring the Batfamily, and next year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a game that’s set in the same universe as the Arkham games. If it’s any consolation, Monolith Productions is working on a Wonder Woman game, but we don’t know when that’s coming. Unlike in the movies, DC has a good shot at beating Marvel in the video game department if it starts exploring non-Batman projects. DC is more than just the caped crusader. Fans have asked for a Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and even a Justice League, game for years. Hopefully, the newly-instated management can do something about it. Speaking of DC games, the earlier Nvidia GeForce Now leak is starting to look very legit. After Square Enix started announcing several of the listed titles like the Chrono Cross remaster, some think that the others are coming as well. If this is true, then NetherRealm might be working on Injustice 3 right now ahead of its January 2023 release date.
